A treat for the Chipping Norton boys

Eleven senior boys of Chipping Norton County School, Oxfordshire, were taken to a Socialist meeting in lesson-time last month.

Mr A.D. Dodds-Parker (Con., Banbury) in the House of Commons yesterday, asked why.

Explained Mr George Tomlison, Minister of Education: I understood that on this date school games were cancelled because of bad weather. The pupils were given permission to go, instead, to hear an address - by the Minister of Education.

Tories roared. So did the Socialists.

Mr Dodds-Parker: Did the Minister confine his talk to soccer?

Mr Tomlinson: I am given to understand in a letter I received from the headmaster that the boys did not particularly want to hear the Minister of Education, but rather to see him. (Laughter)
